Implant Maintenance - Bozeman, MT
Dental Implants Require Healthy Gums
and Bone to Deliver Lifelong Smiles

Extend Your Implant Lifespan with Proper Care and Maintenance
Although dental implants have revolutionized the art and science of tooth replacement, appropriate case selection, advanced surgical skills, and preventive and maintenance strategies are key to successful outcomes. Dental implants are susceptible to plaque-related disease, similar to natural teeth. Peri-implantitis, an aggressive inflammatory condition, can lead to implant failure and is associated with the same risk factors as periodontal disease.
Poor oral hygiene can make it up to 14 times more likely to develop peri-implantitis, while smokers have five times the risk compared to nonsmokers. Systemic conditions associated with poor bone quality or impaired immune function can also contribute to gum and peri-implant diseases. At your first implant consultation at Gallatin Valley Surgical Arts, our board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Brenda Hall, will assess your candidacy for dental implants in Bozeman, MT by analyzing your gum health, bone volume/density, risk factors, and overall health. Dr. Hall will also discuss your integral role in the process, including following presurgical guidelines and postsurgical oral hygiene and scheduling ongoing maintenance visits.
The Reasons Implant Maintenance is Important
- Reduces risk of peri-implantitis
- Preserves gum and bone health
- Prevents implant failure
- Maintains overall oral health
- Protects your investment in dental implants

Proper At-Home and Professional Care Enhances Implant Longevity
Proper At-Home Hygiene Maintenance
It’s important to follow our post-op instructions to reduce the risk of complications and ensure healing progresses. As with natural teeth, gum tissue is the “gatekeeper” to prevent food and bacteria from penetrating and/or compromising your implants and, eventually, your jawbone.
Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a nonalcoholic mouthwash should be completed at least twice daily, every morning and night. This routine will help prevent the accumulation of plaque, bacteria, or tartar build-up around your implants and/or restorations and increase the potential for long-term success and survivability!
Regular Dental Checkups
Although studies have shown maintenance visits decrease the risk of developing peri-implantitis, no standards have been established regarding the intervals or frequency of these visits. As such, Dr. Hall will base this on your overall health, risk factors, and commitment to following proper oral hygiene at home.
For example, if you resumed smoking after healing and osteointegration are complete, you may be subject to more frequent maintenance visits than nonsmokers. Of course, if you experience any issues after undergoing dental implant surgery, we encourage you to schedule a visit as soon as possible.

Protect Your Smile Investment with Good Oral Hygiene and Maintenance
Dental implants are a significant investment in terms of both money and your long-term oral health and quality of life. Prevention of implant complications starts before implant placement and during diagnosis and treatment planning at Gallatin Valley Surgical Arts. This rationale is also applied to your maintenance protocol.
Proper brushing and flossing of your teeth and dental implants to remove plaque can’t be overstated. After you get dental implants in Bozeman, MT, they can transform your smile and life for a lifetime if you practice excellent oral hygiene at home and schedule regular dental visits!
